CANDIDATE FOR West Newbury Selectman

This page outlines Arty’s qualifications, priorities, and timeline for earning the trust of residents as West Newbury’s next selectman.

A polished wooden desk topped with an open, leather-bound notebook, a vintage fountain pen, and an embossed seal of West Newbury. Crisply folded campaign literature and a small glass vase of freshly cut daisies rest nearby. The setting is a sunlit study with panoramic windows looking out over a leafy New England landscape. Golden hour light sweeps across the surface, emphasizing nuance in wood grain and creating a warm, aspirational glow. The mood is productive and trustworthy, with an organized, rule-of-thirds composition that draws focus to the desk. The artistic style is clean, elegant, and modern while remaining approachable.

About Arthur “Arty” DeMattia

My name is Arthur “Arty” DeMattia, and I am proud to be running for Selectman in the Town of West Newbury. I am 41 years old and live here with my wife, Susan, and our two children, Henry and Charlotte.

I graduated from Revere High School in 2002 and went on to attend UMass Lowell before completing my degree at Wentworth Institute of Technology, where I earned a degree in Architectural. Since graduating, I have worked across many areas of construction and design, including mechanical engineering, civil engineering, surveying, structural engineering, and architecture. This hands-on, real-world experience has given me a strong understanding of how projects work from start to finish and how decisions made at the town level affect residents, infrastructure, and budgets.

I have always had a passion for public service and civic involvement. Growing up, I was elected class treasurer in high school and later served as Program Manager at my college radio station at Wentworth. I grew up in Revere, Massachusetts, and previously ran for City Council in the ward where I was raised, gaining firsthand experience in local government and community engagement.

In late 2019, my wife and I decided to move to West Newbury after falling in love with the town’s small-town character, quiet environment, excellent schools, and its close proximity to Boston, where I work. After spending most of my life in the city, moving to West Newbury was a positive and meaningful change for our family. We are proud to call West Newbury our permanent home.

Outside of work and community involvement, my family and I enjoy traveling—especially to baseball games around the country. We are big sports fans of all kinds, and when we are not working or traveling, I enjoy spending time with my family and helping coach my son’s sports teams.

After living in West Newbury for six years, I feel it is time for me to step up and give back to the community that has given so much to my family. I want to work with the people of West Newbury to preserve what makes this town special—keeping it safe, quiet, and community-focused—while also addressing the real challenges we face.

Too often, politicians get elected and then disappear, only showing up again during election season. I want to change that. If elected, I will make myself accessible and available to the residents of West Newbury. I will put systems in place so constituents can reach me, be heard, and receive timely responses. Even when we disagree, I believe in respectful conversation and finding common ground. While I know I can’t make everyone 100% happy, I am committed to working hard to find fair, practical solutions that benefit our town as a whole.

As a Selectman, listening to constituents and working for them is the most important part of the job. Every concern—large or small—matters. If it matters to you, it matters to me.
